When it comes to choosing carpets for high-traffic areas in the home or office, durability and stain-resistance are the most important factors to consider. Here are three suitable options:

  • Solution-dyed nylon carpet: This highly durable synthetic carpet is resistant to wear and tear, stains and fading, making it a popular choice for busy households and office carpets.
  • Polyester carpet: Polyester is another synthetic fibre that is known for its durability. This is a budget-friendly option and also a great choice for high-traffic areas.
  • Wool carpet: Wool fibre is naturally durable and stain-resistant. Although it is a premium carpet option when compared to synthetic fibre carpets, it is known to be a more environmentally-friendly solution.

In addition to fibre type, the carpet style is also an important factor to consider for high-traffic areas. A carpet with a low pile height will help it resist matting and crushing from foot traffic.

On average, if a carpet is well-maintained, it can last between 5 to 15 years. Some carpets can last longer, especially if they are made from high-quality materials such as wool or nylon.

Extend the life of your carpet with the correct carpet maintenance. At Flooring Express, we recommend you look after your carpet by vacuuming regularly, cleaning stains and spills immediately and having it professionally cleaned every 12 to 24 months.
Avoid wearing shoes inside, especially those with hard soles, as they can speed up wear and tear.

Loop pile carpet and cut pile carpet are commonly used terms in the flooring industry, but what actually are they?

These are the two main types of carpet construction. Here is the difference between the two:

  • Loop pile carpet: Loop pile carpets have loops of yarn that are woven through the carpet backing. This creates a series of loops that are left intact. These loops often vary in size, giving the carpet a range of textures and patterns. Overall, loop pile carpets are considered to be more durable compared to cut pile carpets because the loops help to resist crushing and matting.
  • Cut pile carpets: Cut pile carpets refer to a method where the carpet has loops of yarn that are then cut. This leaves the individual strands of yarn standing upright. Cut pile carpets have a range of textures and styles because they can have different levels of thickness and density. Cut pile carpets are often considered to be softer and more plush compared to loop pile carpets.

There are also hybrid styles of carpet that combine loop pile and cut pile construction. An example of this is cut-loop carpets, which have a combination of cut and looped fibres This creates a unique texture and appearance.

Although removing carpet stains might be challenging, many stains can be successfully removed with the correct equipment and methods. Following these general procedures should help you get carpet stains out of your carpet:

  • Blot the stain: As much of the stain as you can should be removed with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Rub the stain gently; else, it can get worse.
  • Apply cleaning solution: Cleanse the stain with a cleaning solution. The kind of stain will determine the kind of solution you use. White vinegar and water can be used in equal parts to create a straightforward cleaning solution.
  • Let the solution sit: Permit the cleaning agent to sit on the stain for a few minutes so that it can permeate the carpets fibres.
  • Blot again: Wipe up the cleaning agent and the stain with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. To completely remove the stain, you might have to repeat this process multiple times.
  • Rinse with water: Rinse the area with water to get rid of any last traces of cleaning agent.
  • Dry the area: Dry the area as rapidly as you can by using a fan or opening windows. This will stop the growth of mould and mildew.

You might need to use a specialised stain remover or seek the help of a professional carpet cleaner if the stain is very difficult to get out. It’s also critical to keep in mind that some stains, like those caused by red wine or pen, might not be completely reversible.

Vinyl flooring is a synthetic flooring made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin and other materials. This is a popular flooring choice as it is low-maintenance, durable and affordable.

Vinyl flooring is available in three main forms: vinyl sheets, vinyl planks and vinyl tiles. Sheet vinyl is a continuous roll of flooring that can be cut to fit any room, while vinyl tiles and vinyl planks are individual tiles and planks that can be arranged in a variety of patterns.

Vinyl flooring options are designed to mimic the appearance of other flooring materials like hardwood, tile, or stone.

Vinyl is resistant to water, stains and scratches, making it a good choice for high-traffic areas and areas prone to moisture like kitchens and bathrooms. With proper installation and maintenance, vinyl flooring can last for years. Vinyl flooring can be installed by a professional or by a skilled DIYer.

Vinyl flooring is a highly water-resistant flooring option that can withstand exposure to moisture better than most other types of flooring materials.

Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and sheet vinyl, in particular, can be considered waterproof if installed correctly, as they have a waterproof core that helps prevent water damage. However, self-adhesive vinyl tiles, also known as peel-and-stick vinyl tiles, may not be completely waterproof and are only water-resistant.

It’s important to keep in mind that while vinyl flooring is an excellent choice for areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, spills and moisture should still be cleaned up quickly to avoid any potential subfloor damage or mould growth.

Installing vinyl flooring can be done by an installation professional or by a skilled DIYer. Vinyl flooring can be installed in a few ways depending on the type of vinyl flooring used.

To install vinyl flooring, prepare the subfloor by making it level and clean.

Then, cut the vinyl flooring to fit the room and apply adhesive or use a click-lock system to lay the vinyl flooring.

Trim the edges and seal them as necessary.

After installation, allow the adhesive to dry before walking on the vinyl flooring.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions is essential.

Consult a professional installer if unsure.

The best way to take care of your vinyl floors is to sweep and vacuum regularly to remove all dirt and debris. Additionally wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining. For a deep clean, mop the floor’s surface with mild detergent and water. Avoid using any abrasive cleaners such as scouring pads or harsh chemicals.
Also, avoid dragging any heavy furniture or appliances across the floor as this can lead to scratches and dents.

Vinyl flooring solutions are ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. This is because vinyl is highly water-resistant and easy to clean. Make sure when you are installing vinyl flooring in kitchens or bathrooms to choose a style that is suitable for wet areas.

Depending on the range laminate and timber flooring selected, they can be water-resistant. Many of our laminate and timber flooring ranges are treated to increase water-repellent protection.

To protect laminate and timber flooring against mould, it is essential to keep the floors dry and clean. Avoid excessive moisture and humidity by ensuring proper ventilation and avoiding water spills that can seep into the floors. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth or mop can also help prevent the growth of mould. If mould growth does occur, it is important to treat it immediately to prevent further damage.

Thanks Craig and Carol for our lovely new floor. The process was much easier than I thought it would be. As soon as I talked to Craig on the phone I was impressed by his system for measuring and quotes and describing all the options. He organised the removal of our tiles and installation of the new laminate. I was very happy with both sets of contractors. They were professional, came on time - and very tidy! Even with the tile removal which I was dreading. Craig personally was easy to get hold of and efficiently dealt with any questions or small issues that arose. Highly recommend- Thanks again 😀
